Welcome to Willow and Whirlygigs!
Willow is a family of trees and shrubs that have slender branches and narrow leaves. There are a number of species of willows and about 100 of these species are native to North America. Willow usually grows near water. The twigs of the willow are soft, slender and bend easily. Because of this, willow has been used for generations to make furniture.
The willow I use, has been grown and harvested from Northern Alberta. It is considered a weed and is freely harvested; superior to willow grown in Southern Alberta due to Chinook conditions. To preserve this outdoor furniture, we treat it with linseed oil and varsol. Outdoor furniture should be covered or stored indoors over winter.
Whirlygigs are unique handmade wind-driven action mechanicals, that represent most anything, as illustrated in our gallery section.
The paint we use withstands summer or winter elements. One of our artists jokes that his pieces come with a life-time warranty; adding that he is now 80 and they should last a few years.
“Next to watching a wood fire burn there is nothing more relaxing than watching a whirlygig blowing in the wind, sitting in your willow chair.”
